ZEELAND, Michigan, September 6, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Gentex Company (NASDAQ: GNTX) today announced the acquisition of Guardian Optical Technologies, an Israeli startup that has launched a unique multimodal sensor technology designed to provide a comprehensive suite of driver and cab monitoring solutions for the automotive industry.

Gentex is a long-time supplier of electro-optical products to the global automotive, aerospace and fire protection industries. It is best known for providing nearly all major automakers with connected car technologies and advanced electronic features that optimize driver vision and improve driving safety.

The heart of Guardian’s technology is a high-resolution infrared-sensitive camera that combines machine vision, depth perception and micro-vibration detection. This proprietary sensor configuration allows the system to monitor not only the driver, but also the entire vehicle interior and all of its objects and occupants, evaluating their behavior, gestures and activities.
The system continuously scans, tracks and determines the physical location of every occupant and object in the vehicle, even without a direct line of sight, by combining two-dimensional video image recognition with 3D depth mapping and motion analysis optical. It is able to detect even the slightest movement, including heartbeats.

“Guardian uses artificial intelligence and computer vision algorithms to create comprehensive cabin sensing functionality for vehicles today and the autonomous era,” said Neil Boehm, CTO of Gentex. “With a single sensor module, we can monitor driver vigilance, fine-tune the deployment of airbags, monitor passenger behavior, and even detect the presence of a child sleeping in a car seat in the back of the vehicle. “

The acquisition of Guardian further strengthens Gentex’s cabin surveillance expertise. For decades, the company has integrated displays, cameras and various ADAS features into its smart mirrors. Since the interior mirror area provides an ideal view of the driver and the entire vehicle interior, this is a logical location for integrating the surveillance camera into the interior.

“A mirrored cab monitoring system would allow automakers to deliver attractive and scalable inter-line functionality in a high-performance location that simplifies regulatory compliance,” said Boehm. “We are currently working on several proof-of-concept designs for driver monitoring solutions integrated into mirrors and overhead consoles. “

In January, Gentex announced the acquisition of Vaporsens, a Utah-based startup that launched new nanofiber detection technology capable of detecting a wide variety of chemicals, including explosives, drugs, VOCs, toxic industrial chemicals, amines, etc. This digital olfaction technology could be used to monitor air quality in passenger vehicles and extended to identify explosives, biohazards and other pollutants for self-driving cars.

“Our goal is to provide automotive manufacturers with comprehensive cab monitoring solutions, from simple driver monitoring to full cab monitoring and machine smell,” continued Boehm. “We are designing a comprehensive and scalable platform based on robust sensor fusion techniques that will enable us to provide functionality for today’s vehicles, transition vehicles and fully autonomous mobility solutions.”

Founded in 2015 and headquartered in Tel Aviv, Israel, Guardian Optical Technologies is dedicated to enabling “passenger-aware” cars to use advanced optical sensor technology that makes vehicles safer and more convenient.

Founded in 1974, Gentex Corporation (NASDAQ: GNTX) is a supplier of auto-dimming mirrors and electronics for the automotive industry, dimmable aircraft windows for the aviation markets, and fire protection products for the aviation industry. the fire protection market.
