Two major cruise lines have applied different strategies to stay competitive in the cruise market and here’s what travelers need to know.

Princess Cruises, the American cruise line owned by Carnival Corporation, has just launched a new auction program. The company will allow customers to bid for cabin upgrades on select cruise ships from September 6.

Norwegian Cruise Line, on the other hand, is currently offering 40% off all cruises and cruise flights through August 22. The offer applies to all accommodation and includes itineraries like the Canary Islands from November 2022, inactive since 2017.

Both companies have great deals for cruise-goers, but there are a few things travelers should consider.

New Princess auction program

A few weeks ago, Princess Cruises announced 47 itineraries for 2023 and 2024 and now the company is offering passengers the possibility of traveling more comfortably with a new auction system.

The new auction program will allow guests to upgrade to an ocean view stateroom, balcony, deluxe balcony, mini-suite or full suite. Depending on their budget, travelers will be able to submit an offer from a certain price.

John Padgett, Princess Chair, said: “Upgrading is a popular request from our customers and we are delighted to offer a process that allows them to upgrade their cabin category by making an offer that suits their budget and style. of life.

According to information shared by Cruise Hive, guests will receive an email with an invitation to participate. Tenders will be charged per person, but the cabin will be available for two people. After submitting their bids, attendees will receive another email informing them if their bid was accepted and they get the upgrade or if it was declined and they just stay in their original cabin.

The new cabin upgrade system will be implemented on five cruises departing from the United States first: Regal Princess, Ruby Princess, Caribbean Princess, Discovery Princess and Enchanted Princess. By October, Princess Cruise Line plans to apply this system to all of its fleets.

The company is making its cruise experience more enjoyable for travelers and finding strategies to create more inclusive programs. The cruise line also recently updated COVID-19 protocols and removed vaccine requirements for most itineraries.

40% off at Norwegian

Travelers should act quickly if they want to take advantage of this promotion. Those who have been thinking about sailing might have a great opportunity to book an itinerary at a bargain price. Norwegian’s 40% discount applies to all destinations until next Monday.

The company has also included its “Free at Sea” upgrade package — which costs around $175 — and gives travelers great perks like free wifi, free tours, unlimited drinks, and more.

Norwegian Cruise currently offers itineraries in Alaska, through the Caribbean and the Mediterranean Sea. The Norwegian Sun ship currently has 8-14 day itineraries that include the Canary Islands and stops in Portugal, Spain and Morocco. Norwegian Prima, another large ship from this cruise line, has itineraries in 2023 that include transatlantic sailing from New York to Reykjavik, Iceland.

The cruise line is also offering travelers an airfare credit, up to $300 per person on select routes in Europe. All these promotions will be available until next Monday.

Competitive cruise lines

Travelers must decide which promotion best suits their travel plans. And while the cruise industry appears to be “back to normal” with fewer COVID-19 restrictions and more sailing routes available, Princes Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line have also recently canceled sailings.

Just days ago, Princess Cruises canceled 11 itineraries due to staff shortages, which the company called “labour challenges”. And this week, Norwegian Cruise Line canceled sailings scheduled for 2023 and 2024 due to supply chain delays. Both companies offered compensation to customers, but this could be an important factor to consider when choosing a cruise line service and promotion.
